Palazzo Vecchio: the Palazzo dei Priori.

The Palazzo dei Priori, known today as Palazzo Vecchio, is one of Arnolfo's best known projects. It was intended as the home of the Priori delle Arti and the Gonfaloniere di Giustizia, which at the time was the body that governed the city. This building, faced in ashlar stone and crowned by a battlement with connecting walkway above which rises an imposing tower 95 metres high, was begun towards the end of the 13th century and finished in 1313.
Visitors are taken on a guided walk where they discover the medieval traces of the palace which then became the royal palace of Duke Cosimo I and, with the help of multimedia and a meeting with a Prior, find out more about life in the seat of government during 14th century Florence.

Museo Storico Topografico - Florence as it was: The Florence of Arnolfo explained
Considerable economic and social growth caused extensive urban expansion in Florence over the 14th century and this was expressed by the new city walls attributed to Arnolfo di Cambio. The mark he left on Florence during the second half of the 14 th century emerges through the analysis of the large Pianta della Catena [Plan of the Chain] and reconstructions of the city's urban development.
At the and of the activity participants are offered the possibility of experiencing at first hand some of the architectural devices adopted during construction of the Palazzo dei Priori, today known as Palazzo Vecchio.
